The Bride of Science. Romance, Reason and Byron's Daughter by Benjamin Woolley.
Fascinating biography of Ada Lovelace the daughter of Annabella Milbanke and the 'Mad, Bad and Dangerous to Know!' Lord Byron. Published in 1999.
Ada collaborated with the man who was believed to be the inspiration for Dr Frankenstein along with Charles Babbage the inventor of a clockwork 'thinking machine'. In our age of ever advancing Artificial Intelligence we can see the seeds being sown for the Machine Age by Ada's flowering but tragic genius - as she tried to bridge the gap between Science and Romanticism whilst careering through her wild life. A life that was almost as dramatic as that of her father the enigmatic Lord Byron.
Ada's work is now recognised as anticipating the creation of the computer so much so that the U.S. Defence dept. named the computer language it developed to control its military machine 'ADA'. She is now recognised as an important female pioneer in the world of computer science and her legacy is still at the root of computing even now in our advanced technical age.
Set against the florid history of her parent's lives, and her own difficult upbringing the rich contents of this enthralling book defy the imagination as to how one young woman with a short and tragic life achieved such momentous work.
"A proper biography of Ada Lovelace has been long overdue. The Bride of Science is a real page turner, which manages the difficult feat of doing justice to a talented woman whose life, from beginning to end, was pure melodrama."
A highly recommended read for anyone fascinated by early computer science or the lives of those connected to the great Romantic Poet Byron.

Kittys Reader Notes
"The Bride of Science: Romance, Reason and Byron's Daughter" is a non-fiction book written by Benjamin Woolley that explores the life and work of Ada Lovelace, who is often considered the world's first computer programmer.
The book begins with Ada's unconventional childhood, growing up as the daughter of the infamous poet Lord Byron and his wife Annabella Milbanke. Ada's mother, a mathematician, encouraged Ada's education in mathematics and science, which was highly unusual for a young woman in the early 19th century.
As Ada grew older, she became interested in the work of Charles Babbage, an inventor who was developing the idea of a mechanical computer, and she began working with him on what is now considered to be the world's first computer program.
Throughout the book, Woolley weaves together Ada's personal life with her contributions to the field of computing, exploring her relationships with Babbage and other important figures in the scientific community of the time.
ILLUSTRATED: Yes (Black and White)
