Cider with Rosie by Laurie Lee Published by Bodley Head in the 1970's Classic Vintage Coming of Age Novel.

In the same format as the first edition of 1959 this bright and fresh vintage book of Cider with Rosie comes from the Bodley Head publishers of that very sought after first edition of Laurie Lee's iconic end of an epoch and coming of age autobiographical novel.

Cider with Rosie is a book that took England by storm in the 1950's. When first published this poignant novel tells of a way of life in our country England that was as pastoral as that of Thomas Hardy's Wessex novels. We travel with the young Laurie as he comes of age during this ominous period of the First World War and early 20th century, as his home, the quiet Cotswold's village of Slad goes through cateclysmic changes all told in the poetic and lyrical prose of the author.

Laurie writes of seeing the first motor cars coming to a valley where such things were unheard of and we learn about the trials and tribulations of his rites of passage that of course, include drinking cider with his cousin Rosie. Along with tales of family drama.

The book is emotive and poignant throughout, with a bittersweet undercurrent that is unavoidable when telling of how a way of life that lasted around a thousand years crumbles irretrievably for the community he grew up with. Despite this it is hopeful and charming and lingers joyously in the memory after reading.

This iconic book has a place on every book shelf so why not consider this giftworthy, near pristine, vintage book in the same livery as the first edition, with the wonderful jacket art by John Ward R.A. who also created the touching line drawn illustrations that add wonderfully to the text. A true classic.
