Kittys Reader Notes

" In the time of George III how utterly different were the lives led by people in Turkey, Brazil, the Baltic Provinces, Portugal and Persia. Separated by vast distances, over which news then took many months to travel, the majority of the inhabitants of any one did not even know of the existence of the others.

Between 1807 and 1809, handsome, daring Roger Brook -- for many years Prime Minister Pitt's most resourceful Secret Agent -- lived, loved and intrigued in them all. The passages describing these countries in that age alone would make a fascinating book, but Evil in a Mask is far more than that.

We see Napoleon, no longer the great administrator who restored order to France after the chaos of the Revolution, or the brilliant young general driving back the armies of the Monarchs who would have again imposed tyranny upon her, but as an autocrat himself, whose insatiable lust for power drove him to wage needless wars that were bleeding France white.

In these pages we meet those two great diplomats, Talleyrand and Prince Metternich, that arch schemer Joseph Fouche, the weaking Regent of Portugal Prince Joao, Admiral Sir Sidney Smith, General Sir John Moore, the brave Queen Louisa of Prussia, the Czar Alexander, the Shah of Persia and the beautiful French girl who became the 'Veiled Crown' of Turkey.

All of them play their part in strict accordance with true history.

Add to that all Roger's personal story of his passion for the lovely licentious Lisala de Pombal, that led him from one desperate situation to another, and we have the unique mixture of informative writing and great story telling that has made Dennis Wheatley the best of best sellers with both sexes and young and old alike. "

A great find for readers interested in historical adventure and fans of the Roger Brook series.
