Kittys Reader Notes

This book on early Exploration of the Moon, is an interesting retrograde exploration of what needed to be in place for man to make the giant leap in space travel to reach the moon! Along with an insightful prediction of what the future might hold for space travellers wherein Mr Branley showed an uncanny level of foresight:

"For thousands of years man has looked at the moon, first with the unaided eye, then with simple telescopes, and now with a fast growing array of astronomical instruments. But until recently, even with the most sophisticated equipment and techniques, there were many questions which no one could answer with any real certainty: what is the moon made of? Where did it come from? Does it support life? How intense is the radiation on the surface? The answers are vital, because before long men will explore the moon at first hand. The first explorers must be assured that the unknown have been reduced to a minimum, that the hazards of the lunar environment have been determined, and that equipment and procedures have been developed for coping with them.

In his book Dr Branley explains what man has learned so far about the nature of the Moon. He describes the new discoveries made possible by the space age: the lunar probes in which complex, remote controlled instruments are sent to land on or pass close by the moon together precise data for transmission to earth, and to the flights of astronauts. He outlines the problems yet to be solved and describes the even more sophisticated probes and manned flights that will supply the information which will enable a man to be landed on the moon.

Finally Dr Bradley gathers together the most reliable information available to look far into the future – into the possibility of establishing a lunar colony and what it might accomplish. He reviews current thinking on sites and buildings, and describes the entirely new equipment and unorthodox methods that will be needed for men to survive in that desolate environment."
