Author Bio & Publication

Goldilocks and the Three Bears was originally written by Robert Southey (born 12th August 1774 died 21st March 1843)

At the time he wrote the Tale of the Three Bears (Goldilocks) he lived in the village of Burton in Dorset not far at all from the New Forest. Less than two miles away from that primal forest. A rural location that probably fuelled his fantasy of three bears living deep in the woods.

He first told the tale to friends in the early 19th century around 1813 although the tale was slightly different featuring an old woman rather than the pretty Goldilocks we know today from the tale.

In 1837 he refined his story for a younger audience and included the character we now know as synonymous with Goldilocks of the pretty young girl with golden hair who adventures into the home of the three bears.

As Southey was a poet the tale was first published in a collection of his works of prose and poetry called 'The Doctor'. Originally calling it 'The Tale of the Three Bears' the name changing later to 'Goldilocks'.

Southey also wrote lesser known epic poems of mythology and fantasy but he will always be remembered most for his charming fantasy about the three little bears living in the forest and naughty Goldilocks who ate their porridge!
