Grimms Fairy Tales Richard Adams and Pauline Ellison Vintage Children's Book 1980's
Out of stock
Richard Adams introduces this Classic Children's Fairy Tales Book by the Brother's Grimm in this attractive vintage children's book from the 1980's. "Grimm's Fairytales" gloriously Illustrated by Pauline Ellison.
This lovely vintage fairytale book contains the translation of these traditional folk tales and legends that were first collected long ago by the Brothers Grimm.
This unusual vintage children's book with the scholarly introduction by Richard Adams contains the old fairy stories as they have been translated from the original German by the Brothers Grimm and they are in the old folk tale form, not noticeably altered for a modern audience. The stories are told in the old-fashioned wording and rather than the popular modern styles we are used to in contemporary children's books.
The brothers Grimm, Jacob and Wilhem were scholars themselves who in the 18th & 19th century travelled extensively collecting traditional folktales and folklore, transferring these tales previously only recorded by vocal tradition into written form so they could be preserved for posterity. And we are so glad they did.
The full page, full colour glossy illustrations by Pauline Ellison are exquisite and unusual, she seems to have been influenced strongly by the Dutch painters and adds an air of surrealism to the images.
The book contains nineteen of the wonderful fairy tales by the Brothers Grimm including many that we have grown up with such as:
- "Little Snow White"
- "Hansel and Gretel"
- "Cinderella"
- "Rumpelstiltskin"
- "Little Briar Rose"
We also find uncommon and wonderful old tales such as "The Seven Ravens" and "The Golden Bird" which are exciting to discover if you have not read them before.
It is actually a delight to read these 'old as time' tales, that have been part of our collective history for so long, in as close as we can probably come to the original form.
Overall this is a very pleasing book of wonderful traditional old fairytales in lovely condition and the fascinating introduction by Richard Adams certainly adds to the enjoyment.

Kittys Notes:
If you long to venture beyond Ladybird Well-Loved Tales this classic telling of the original old fairytales by the Brothers Grimm is the book for you.
This book is a delight for anyone who is interested in reading these wonderful old fairy stories, tradiitonal folk tales or call them what you please in their most colloquial and original forms albeit translated here from the German.
The wonderful illustrations by Pauline Ellison give an archaic feel to the stories and enhance them beautifully. These enjoyable traditional children's stories, could be shared with children, as found in this book and centuries before, or you could swap out some of the unfamiiar words yourself perhaps to engage your child, true to tradition this is how these stories were passed from person to person originally.
Excerpt from this book "Grimm's Fairy Tales"
"Surely the most marvellous quality of these tales is simply their startling beauty - sometimes common as a primrose, again numinous and magnificent as a rainbow. There is something of a paradox about this beauty. The simplicity and commonplace manner of narration heighten the splendour of the Golden Bird or of Cinderella' arrival at the ball. So much intellectualizing is done over the tales nowadays that sometimes it seems to me, we are in danger of overlooking this best reason for continuing to value and tell them - that they are very beautiful" Richard Adams .
