Kitty's Notes:
Another wonderful antique children's book illustrated by the talented female artist and illustrator Mabel Lucie Attwell.
Attwell won the hearts of England with her illustrations throughout the 20th century of fairy tale angelic and chubby little children having happy times, and even was credited as keeping morale up during wartime with the lighthearted and hopeful postcards she created during the war years.
Every collection of vintage and antique children's books should have an edition illustrated by Attwell as her illustrations were certainly an important part of children's literature during the 20th century. She illustrated works by famous authors such as Hans Christian Anderson and Lewis Carroll as well as her own series of annuals for children.
It is a shame so many of these lovely old books are being broken up now for the illustrations and this book deserves being kept intact to give pleasure for a few more generations yet!
Book Excerpt from "Hans Andersen's Fairy Stories":
"'The Steadfast Tin Soldier'
There were once five-and-twenty tin soldiers that were all brothers, for they were all made out of the same old tin pan. They all shouldered their muskets, looked stiff, and wore a smart red and blue uniform. The first thing they heard in this world, when the lid was taken off the box in which they lay, were the words 'Tin Soldiers!' spoken by a little boy, who was clapping his hands with joy.
They had been given him on his birthday, and he now set them up on the table. Each soldier was exactly the image of the other, except one that was a little different to the rest; and he had only one leg, having been melted the last of the batch, when there was not enough tin left. Yet he stood as firmly on his one leg as the others on their two legs; and it was precisely he who became a most remarkable character...."
