Jane Austen's Northanger Abbey Classic Novel in Penguin Paperback 2003

Pristine vintage paperback edition of Jane Austen's all time classic novel Persuasion, although not as well known as Pride and Prejudice this is a fabulous novel set in Regency England displaying all her scintillating skill as an author.

Northanger Abbey was published posthumously in 1817. This delightful novel follows Catherine Morland, our young and imaginative protagonist, as she navigates the complexities of society and the pitfalls of her own imagination. It is a witty and satirical work that both parodies and pays homage to the gothic novels popular in Austen's time.

The novel begins by introducing Catherine, an ordinary young woman from a modest family. She is invited to spend time in Bath, a fashionable city known for its social scene. Catherine eagerly embraces this new experience and becomes acquainted with various characters, including the Tilney siblings, Henry and Eleanor, who become her close friends. Unlike Austen's other works, "Northanger Abbey" embraces the gothic genre to challenge its conventions. The novel cleverly blends romance, comedy, and suspense, showcasing Austen's versatility as a writer. While the story includes elements of mystery and suspense, it ultimately emphasizes the importance of reason, balance, and moral integrity.

Editorial Review:

"These modern editions are to be strongly recommended for their scrupulous texts, informative notes and helpful introductions"

Brian Southam, The Jane Austen Society.

Kittys Reader Notes & Book Excerpt

Catherine's active imagination is influenced by her passion for gothic novels. As she spends more time with the Tilneys, she becomes fascinated by the idea of dark secrets and mysterious occurrences at their family home, Northanger Abbey. Austen masterfully contrasts Catherine's romanticized notions with the reality of everyday life, highlighting the dangers of allowing one's imagination to run wild.

Through Catherine's journey, Austen explores themes such as social expectations, the power of friendship, and the importance of self-discovery. The novel satirizes societal norms, particularly the superficiality and pretensions of the upper classes. Austen's sharp wit and irony are evident as she exposes the flaws and follies of the characters, providing astute social commentary along the way.
