The Flame Olive Wadsley Classic Vintage Romance Novel Antique Book 1918
The Flame Olive Wadsley Classic Vintage Romance Novel Antique Book 1918
In stock
"The Flame" by Olive Wadsley Classic Vintage Romance Antique Book from 1918. Scarce with iconic Dust Jacket.
A scarce survivor from the beginning of the 20th Century this wonderful antique romance novel "The Flame" by Olive Wadsley is a great period romance, especially with the rarely found and fantastic Art Deco era artwork to the very rare dust jacket.
The 'sensational' storyline set in glamorous Paris, includes a mad wife (very Mrs Rochester), a cartoonist and a love interest of an aristocratic french Count, the wacky storyline typical of the romantic silver screen cinema of the 1920's.
In the era this book was published 'thrilling' romance novels of this kind were just becoming mainstream. This cute vintage romance book by Olive Wadsley must have been highly popular in the early 20th century as it was adapted to the silent screen two years after this little old romance book was published in 1918.
The book is in good condition for its antiquarian age with just a little slack to the binding. No loose pages and rare complete with the dust jacket. Although it was a fun contemporary romance novel in its time it is now of course a historical romance to us set in the early 20th century.
A wonderful little piece of history wrapped up in the early pulp fiction pages of this antique book from 1918, just around the end of the first world war and the start of the jazz age.
This super old romance book would make a great prop for a 1920's stage production.

Kitty's Notes:
Around the time this book was published we had vamps like Theda Bara at the movies and this great little pulp fiction romance is set firmly in that period. The writing is lively and enjoyable, and it makes a fun read for anyone who likes period romance books.
Early pulp romance books such as this paved the way for some of the great romantic novelists of the 20th century such as Georgette Heyer and Barbara Cartland.
A nice find with the great old 'Silent Screen' style dust jacket with the shocking for the period, near kiss!
This is just the type of book Daisy would have read in Downton Abbey it would make a smashing little prop for theatre or a movie or just to have on display in any vintage themed decor.
Book Excerpt from "The Flame":
" One afternoon walkng in the Champs Elysées, they met Lord Robert.
Toni hailed him shyly.
He stopped at once and talked and laughed, looking and being delightful. He asked Toni's address before he walked on.
Simone adored him at once. She raved for days about his height, and his eyes and his beautiful strong hands. Her constant discussion of him wakened interest on Toni's part. She really hoped he would come.
He did, one day at tea time, and asked Madame de Vries's permission to carry Toni off to Rumpelmayer's. She was jubilant; this was a real adventure, a real happening of life. It was a glorious afternoon, and Toni was very conscious of the glances Lord Robert and she excited. She noticed again his attractive clothes and the funny way his mouth twitched under his moustache when he laughed... "
