The mysterious Tudor Inn 'The Pale Horse' with it's resident witch sets the scene for this marvellous mystery by Agatha which is one of my all time favourites.

As the heat rises for Mark Easterbrook the cauldron simmers and he learns the sinister secrets of this quiet English Village. Rather than a resident detective we have the charming Mark Easterbrook narrating this intriguing novel.

Truly Agatha at her best, this book was first published in the 1960's when she had honed her skill perfectly at crafting these entertaining mystery novels that make such a great nostalgic read and cosy crime book today.

And spot the reference to the all time children's classic book, 'Alice's adventures in Wonderland' in the excerpt below. Not only a great author Agatha obviously had great taste in books too!

There are two methods, it seems to me, of approaching this strange business of the Pale Horse. In spite of the dictum of the White King, it is difficult to achieve simplicity. 'Begin at the beginning, go on to the end, and then stop.' For where is the beginning?

To a historian, that always is the difficulty. At what point in history does one particular portion of history begin.

In this case, you can begin at the moment when Father Gorman set forth from his presbytery to visit a dying woman. Or you can start before that, on a certain evening in Chelsea.

Perhaps since I am writing the greater part of this narrative myself, it is there that I should begin."

Perfectly clean copy of this great vintage paperback book from the 1980's and a robust book.

Very minimal signs of wear, tight and firm with just the tanning to the outer edge of the pages showing it's age. The pages are all crisp and clean.

Pictorial card wraps still firm and crisp with the fab surreal design.

The spine is excellent with titles visible with a very light wrinkle but not creased or cracked.

No names or inscriptions or graffiti of any kind written in the book.
