The Plague Dogs Richard Adams First Edition Vintage Book 1st Print Collectable 1977

Richard Adams' classic Novel "The Plague Dogs", Very nice first edition, first printing 1977, of this collectable vintage book by the famous author of the famous children's classic tale about rabbits.
"The Plague Dogs" was published following Richard Adams' immense success with his much loved tale of wandering rabbits that had such a strong conservationist theme.
Here we have for sale a pleasing first edition from 1977 of this important book about two dog heroes escaping from cruelty, that arrived 5 years later.
Wrapped up in an exciting adventure story about the dogs, is a heartbreakingly important moral about animal rights. As this book explores themes about our duty towards respecting animals and man's negative intervention with nature.
The worthy moral themes do not detract from the fact that this is an absolutely gripping novel with a thrilling and exciting storyline that comes to a satisfying end and anyone who cares at all about dogs and animal welfare, will be totally entranced from the start.
Because of the topic, of course it is a dark read at times, but very well worth the journey and equally as memorable in it's own way as his greatest novel "Watership Down".
A nice collectable first edition from a very important British author who did much good for the environment and animal welfare by highlighting some of the worst issues of the era in his novels.
This book is in excellent vintage condition, so if you are looking for a collectable book gift, for a fan of Richard Adam's novels you might like to know that complementary gift wrap is included with all items purchased from our bookshop.

Kittys Notes:
Richard Adams' love for dogs shines through this wonderful book, that despite the gritty theme is actually very amusing in places. And it is apparent he seemed to greatly enjoy imagining life as one of his favourite animals.
This is often quite a gruelling read in places and somewhat graphic with its colourful descriptions of some of the issues the dogs faced in the research centre, and their fight for survival after they gain their first taste of freedom.
It is a somewhat hard book to read, but one that makes your life richer and you will be proud of yourself if you do read it.
Not a book for young children, young adults might read it with parental discretion but certainly a classic from this favourite British author for the grown-ups.
The second favourite of mine after his classic children's novel "Watership Down" and if this had come first I think it would have achieved greater acclaim.
Excerpt from this book "The Plague Dogs":
"Despite the strange, lonely surroundings, Snitter began to take heart - from the long forgotten sensation of damp earth between his pads, from the twinkling light, moving branches and leaves, the coloured fragments all about him in the grass - harebell and lousewort, scabious and tormentil - and the smells and rustling sounds of other unseen creatures. A rabbit crossed the track and he dashed after it, lost it, hunted back and forth and then forgot it as she stopped to sniff at a dor-beetle under a blue-and-green-banded fungus growing between two stones. At length he ran back to Rowf, who lay gnawing on a stick.
'There are cats here, anyway. Sort of cats. Long ears, but you can chase them.'
The stick snapped and Rowf let the broken end fall from his mouth. 'Nothing to eat'.
'There will be. How the wind sends the leaves running across the trees! Then where do they go ? Never mind, there are always more.' Snitter raced away again..."
