Kittys Notes:
One of the amazing 1970's vintage children's books that has somewhat fallen by the wayside, this book by Richard Adams, illustrated by the amazing Alan Aldridge is fabulous in my opinion. The almost surreal illustrations are gloriously coloured and really bring the exciting character of the ship's cat alive. The olde worlde style of the poetry adds a charm rarely found in modern children's books and make a very fun read. Like all the best vintage kid's books of course our brave pussy cat hero wins out in the end. Perfect story book for a cat loving, pirate loving, young historian!
Excerpt from 'The Ship's Cat' book:
"What boots to sharpen English Claws,
What boots to spit and mew,
Shackled below the Spanish Decks,
With Thirty of the crew,
To smell the bilge and prison stink,
Weevils to munch and scum to drink,
What weary days ensue! "
