Vintage Puffin Paperback from the 1970's of "Watership Down" Richard Adams Classic Vintage Children's book about Wild Rabbits on an Epic Journey.

A sweet old Puffin Paperback edition of Richard Adams' wonderful 1970's children's classic tale of a warren of rabbits displaced from their home, journeying together to find a safe place to set up their new home. This charming old paperback is in uncommonly good condition, as these are usually found quite shabby.

This poignant and moving book touched the heart of the nation when it was first published in 1972, and adults found they also loved this marvellous tale set in the English countryside.

The iconic full wrap cover art to this classic paperback book was by Pauline Baynes who was famed for illustrating the original Chronicles of Narnia, "The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe" books and was one of the most esteemed Children's illustrators of the 20th Century.

The Watership Down Paperback was first published by Puffin in 1973. This edition was printed in 1974 so is a sweet early vintage copy of this vintage children's Puffin book.

A Beautiful story to read and enjoyable to read in the original Puffin printing. Recently the book has gained much revived acclaim as a children's classic and despite being criticised because it honestly describes the brutality of nature it has the timeless appeal of an all time classic children's book that once read is never forgotten. And in good enough condition to be bought for a vintage gift, especially as complimentary gift wrapping is included.

Kittys Reader Notes & Book Snippet

Kitty's Notes:

Heart-breaking at times and a bit of a weepy but the end is heart-warming, an epic journey indeed! Certainly one of my all time favourite books. It explores the values of love, friendship and the perils of the natural world touching on loss and death but don't be put off by that.

Despite the overly criticised dark themes this is a beautiful heart-warming children's book about love, loyalty, friendship and triumphing over the odds that everyone should experience.

The book teaches some valuable life lessons about respecting wildlife and the environment and also the darker aspects of the book are based on nothing other than the actual brutality of the natural world so an honest and educational read with discretion for your child.

The book highlighted concerns about the over-development of the environment and the damage to wildlife and was written by Richard Adams a great nature lover and passionate about conservation.

Excerpt from the First Page of "Watership Down":

"The primroses were over. Towards the edge of the wood wher the ground became open and sloped down to a new fence and a brambly ditch beyond, only a few fading patches of pale yellow still showed among the dog's mercury and oak tree roots. On the other side of the fence , the upper part of the field was full of rabbit-holes. In places the grass was gone altogether and everywhere there were clusters of dry droppings, through which nothing but the ragwort would grow. A hundred yards away, at the bottom of the slope, ran the brook, no more than three feet wide, half-choked with king-cups, water-cress and blue brook-lime. The cart-tracked crossed by a brick culvert and climbed into the opposite slope to a five barred gate in the thorn hedge. The gate led into the lane.

The May sunset was red in clouds, and there was still half an hour to twilight. The dry slope was dotted with rabbits - some nibbling at the thin grass near their holes, others pushing further down to look for dandelions or perhaps cowslip the rest had missed. Here and there one sat upright on an ant-heap and looked about, with ears erect and nose in the wind. But a blackbird singing undisturbed on the outskirts of the wood, showed that there was nothing alarming there and in the other direction, along the brook, all was plain to be seen, empty and quiet. The warren was at peace... "
