Oscar Wilde Stories for Children beautifully illustrated Vintage Hardback Book

Stories include all the classic fairy tales written by Oscar Wilde, The Happy Prince, The Nightingale and the Rose, The Devoted Friend, The Selfish Giant, The Remarkable Rocket and the Young King. The stories are classic and beautiful and sometimes funny but also have a bittersweet sadness to them are very moving especially the heartbreaking Happy Prince with his tragic friend the swallow. We now understand with hindsight that these stories were very personal and allegorical, with some stories and characters loosely based upon his circle of friends and life experiences.

These Fairy tales for children by Oscar were written in the Victorian Times when stories for children were very different, and often had a deep moral and often Christian meaning. Many were also written during very sad times for Oscar Wilde (including being written whilst he was in prison) who had really quite a tragic life .

Each story is exquisitely illustrated by artist and children's author Jenny Thorne, to bring these beautiful and poignant tales, that each have moral message, to life for your children.

Each story has deep and meaningful themes. They deal with issues such as unrequited love and loss and the shallowness of vanity.

There is Oscar Wilde's humour in the stories but tinged with bitterness due to his life situation at the time and being incarcerate, they are very lovely but they are not Enid Blyton.

As an Adult you will love this classic literature by one of the most famous and witty English Writers and Icon of the Victorian Era.
