Wonderful Mary Burchell Vintage Romance Book from the 1960's "A Song Begins" a Classic Vintage Mid Century Romance about a budding Opera Singer.

lf you are looking to buy some of the old romance books from the 20th century this wonderful romantic novel by Mary Burchell is a classic favourite and a highly enjoyable love story.

It is set around the glamorous world of Opera in the 1960's and tells the story of Anthea as she tries to scale the heights as a songstress in the world of music. And what of her relationship with the mysterious and steely benefactor Oscar, will she ever actually please him?

Totally clean and innocent romance book ideal for gentle escapism and if you are an old or new fan of Mary Burchell's gentle romances then despite being over half a century old still a clean and bright edition and almost excellent with just a slight scuff to the dustcover spine and a few minor signs of age. This book is the First Edition hardback from 1965, the same year as the book was published for the first time by Mills and Boon.

One of the earliest popular Mills and Boon authors Mary Burchell had a fascinating life and was also passionate about the world of Opera, and knowledgeable enough to create a marvellous sense of realism about the happenings in the era of perhaps the greatest and certainly inimitable opera singers such as the divine Maria Callas.

This is the first book of what went on to become the popular "Warrender Saga", the first books in a series are often the hardest to find and this particular book is in very good condition.

The marvellous mid-century Dust Jacket Design by Francis Marshall.

Kittys Reader Notes & Book Excerpt

Book Excerpt:

"Much as she would have loved to become a professional singer, Anthea realised that it was out of the question. So when an unknown benefactor had sufficient faith in her voice to pay for her training under the celebrated operatic conductor Oscar Warrender, Anthea felt her dreams were coming true. She had realised that it would not be easy, but was she going to be tough enough to work under such an exacting taskmaster. For Oscar Warrender not only worked her gruellingly hard , he seemed to think he had the right to direct her private life as well!"

"Mary Burchell herself has a deep love ... of the world of opera, and she gives us a vivid and accurate picture of its glamour, its pitfalls its rewards and its heartbreaks. "

Kitty's Notes:

If you buy this book settle down for a glorious escapist read taking you back to the fabulous world of Opera in the 1960's, and at least try to find some Maria Callas to listen to at the same time for the perfect atmosphere.

A perfect indulgence if you want to dream of wonderful 1960's evening dresses, perfect gentleman and the glamorous life of an opera singer all wrapped up in a sweet and gentle love story of yesterday.

Mary Burchell was a great romantic fiction novelist in the Mid 20th century, whom has kind of fallen by the wayside in the modern era, but she is well worth reviving and may become one of your favourite romance authors!

* The great 1960's period book jacket is by the artist Francis Campbell who designed many of Barbara Cartland and was also a prolific illustrator of 'Vogue' magazines in the Mid-Century era.
