Kittys Reader Notes
"This Roger Brook story begins in 1814 after Napoleon’s first abdication. Roger now the Earl of Kildonan accompanies Castlereagh to the Congress of Vienna. Thence he is sent to Elba to assess the likelihood of the exiled Emperor planning a return. He arrives in his false identity as Colonel Comte de Brooke commander of the Legion of Honour. There he is caught up in Napoleon's bid to regain his throne, accompaniess him during his amazing march to Paris, his last campaign and final defeat.
Meanwhile Rogers wife has become an alcoholic and possessed by demoniac jealousy she attempts to murder Georgina (whom Roger has loved since his teens) and nearly succeeds in ruining him.
Mr Wheatley has always been praised for the accuracy of his historic backgrounds - this book is no exception. The Count d’Erlons army corps was withdrawn from Quatres Bras to Ligny by Napoleon, but arrived so late that it could not take part in either battle.
Nathan Rothschild did look on up to the Battle of Waterloo from a nearby hill and made a million on the result.
The last two chapters are perhaps the most exciting that Dennis Wheatley has ever written. At the very end we learn the outcome of Roger and Georgina's long romance. It can be claimed that as the grand finale of a love story it is unique."
