Favourite Fairy Tales Margaret Tarrant Vintage Fairy Story Book 1940's Beautifully Illustrated

Margaret Tarrant remains one of my favourite female artists and illustrators of the 20th century. She gained great popularity with her dreamy watercolour illustrations and paintings that were so popular they were licenced by the Medici Company who issued prints, Christmas cards, and postcards of her most popular works. I feel like so many of our female artists and illustrators of the past her exquisite work was under-appreciated but her magical illustrations live on to delight us with their artistry.

This early 20th century children's book from the "Sunshine Series" is still wonderfully complete with every beautifull illustration intact as oftentimes in the past these old books were pillaged for nursery pictures. It is magical to read these classic old fairy tales with Margaret Tarrant's enchanting illustrations alongside.

Extract from this Book "Favourite Fairy Tales":

"The very next day the good fairy, who was thousands of leagues away, heard of her godchild's misfortune, and rushed to the palace in her chariot drawn by fiery dragons.

Invisible to all, she passed through the palace, touching with her wand as she went every living thing. Immediately a deep sleep fell on all she touched. Ladies-in-waiting, maids of honour, officers, gentlemen-in-waiting, cooks, scullions, guards, pages, porters, even the very horses in the stables and the cats in front of the fires fell asleep ; and the strangest circumstance that they all went to sleep in a moment, without having to finish what they were about. The very spits before the kitchen fire ceased turning when they were only half way round, and the princess's little lap dog stood on only three legs.

In a few days a thick and thorny hedge grew up all around the palace, and the forest trees intertwined their branches to form a wall that neither man nor beast could get through.... "

A much loved children's book from the 1940's this book is in very good robust condition with typical signs of age.

Complete with all 24 colour plates in very good condition.

The spine is worn and faded but still sturdy although rubbed at the top and bottom with titles slightly faded on the green cloth.

The front illusrtrated board is very good with some minor wear.

Exterior of the text block is dust stained with some light foxing that doesn't affect the inner pages or illustrations of note.

Interior pages are generally clean and bright with just very light occasional spots of age freckling/foxing and dust staining.

A small watermark to inner front board and a quaint historical pen and ink gift inscription to the front free endpaper.

Overall a very good antique edition of this collectable old Fairy Tale book.
