Heidi Johanna Spyri A tale for Children Dutton New York 1930 Beautiful Vintage Book
In stock
Beautiful Old Edition of the Classic Children's Book "Heidi" by Johanna Spyri enchantingly illustrated by Lizzie Lawson with 12 colour plates and frontispiece. Published in 1930.
The author Johanna Spyri felt this was a "tale for children and those who love children" and the moving tale of the little girl Heidi growing up in the Swiss Alps is a classic story that once read is never forgotten. Highly popular this book was made into film in the 20th century launching the young Shirley Temple into stardom.
This charming vintage edition published by J. M. Dent in collaboration with E. P. Dutton is a reprint of the first English edition that was published in 1909 and is actually a very early version of this wonderful old story about the little girl under the wing of her gruff old grandfather who does his best to look after her against all odds. I daresay this book inspired a generation of people in the 1960's to keep their own goats that incidentally are generally lovely friendly creatures.
The book is aged in places to the exterior but interior pages are still bright and the colour plate illustrations are lovely and quaint. The book also has black and white line drawn illustrations scattered throughout the text.
This wonderful escapist story of a simpler way of life is just the thing to while away a winter's evening, with a perfectly pastoral cottage-core vibe, and if you loved this story as a child why not share it with your own children or grandchildren.
A sweet little heirloom book that has survived nearly a century now dating back to the 1930's and quite a scarce and lovely collectable edition for your bookshelf.

Kitty's Notes:
Get ready to run through the hills yodelling with this adorable and quite scarce 1930's hardback vintage book of Johanna Spyri's children's classic "Heidi" The book has a fabulous if slightly faded design to the front board of the Swiss mountains and pine trees opening to the charmingly illustrated contents of this sweet old children's book.
Sadly, this enchanting story seems a little out of fashion nowadays. I remember the first time I read it I demanded toasted cheese for supper and a goat of my own! So be prepared.
This story always reminds me of that other sentimental classic "Silas Marner" where the gruff old character is redeemed by the love of a child. But in Heidi you can smell the pine trees and feel the chill of the mountain air and settle down for pure sentimental escapism.
A charming children's classic that should still be read and enjoyed today. So why not introduce someone to this lovely old story.
Extract from this Book "Heidi":
"There was no Peter that day, and Heidi stood at the little window looking out in wonderment, for the snow was beginning again, and the thick flakes kept falling till the snow was up to the window, and still they continued to fall, and the snow grew higher, so that at last the window could not be opened, and she and her grandfather were shut up fast within the hut.
Heidi thought this was great fun and ran from one window to the next to see what would happen next, and whether the snow was going to cover the whole hut, so that they would have to light a lamp although it was broad daylight. But things did not get as bad as that, and the next day, the snow having ceased, the grandfather went out and shovelled away the snow round the house, and threw it into such great heaps that they looked like mountains standing at intervals either side of the hut.
And now the windows and door could be opened, and it was well it was so, for as Heidi and her grandfather were sitting one afternoon on their three-legged stools before the fire there came a great thump at the door followed by several others, and then the door opened. It was Peter, who had made all that noise knocking the snow off his shoes; he was still white all over with it, for he had to fight his way through deep snowdrifts, and large lumps of snow that had been frozen upon him still clung to his clothes. He had been determined, however, not to be beaten and to climb up to the hut for it was a week now since he had seen Heidi.... "
