Jane Austen and the Clergy by Irene Collins First Edition 2nd Imp. Hardback book 1994  Hambledon Press, Biography.

This well-written book is a fabulous literary read for anyone interested in the life and times of the beloved author of Pride and Prejudice,  and especially wishes to learn more about the 19th century Georgian England society she lived in. Either dedicated student of her books or enthusiast. Would be ideal to broaden reading for anyone studying at degree or PHD level around the life and works of Jane Austen or social history interest.

This enjoyable and detailed vintage book explores in great depth,  the constant thread between Jane Austen's life and that of her clerical background. Despite the fact that clergymen figure as characters often throughout Austen's work this fascinating exploration by Irene Collins is the first time this profound influence upon her writing and life has been explored in such thorough detail.

Editorial Review:

"This is a hugely readable book, which will provide the greatest possible pleasure to all Janeites, and will tell all but the most fanatically learned a good deal they did not know."
Daily Telegraph

We consider Austen's characters such as Mr.Collins in Pride and Prejudice, Mr Tilney in Northanger Abbey, Mr Elton in Emma and well as subsidiary characters such as Dr. Grant in Mansfield park.

In writing this book about Jane Austen's life the author has drawn on sources such as her letters and novels as well as broader facts about her life all meticulously researched.

An entertaining and in depth read for an Austen fan that's sure to add richer enjoyment to the reading of her novels.

Kittys Reader Notes

Through meticulous research and thoughtful analysis, Collins uncovers the profound influence of Austen's upbringing and associations with clergymen. She highlights the unique perspectives Austen gained from being the daughter of a clergyman, the sister of two clergymen, and the cousin of several others. These relationships provided her with firsthand insights into the world of the clergy, their families, and the social and moral dynamics of their communities.

Collins examines Austen's novels and skillfully demonstrates how clergymen are integral to the stories and themes woven throughout her works. From the charming and witty Henry Tilney in "Northanger Abbey" to the moral dilemmas faced by Edward Ferrars in "Sense and Sensibility," Collins reveals the depth and complexity of Austen's clergyman characters. She explores their portrayal as heroes, confidants, and foils, and how they contribute to Austen's exploration of society, morality, and romance.
