Exquisitely Illustrated Vintage Children's book by Mabel Lucie Attwell, dating from the 1930's, First Edition of "Lucie Attwell's Fairy Book". Sweet old Fairytales with Wonderful Colour Plates, All Present and Correct.

This early fairy story book by Mabel Lucie Attwell has some of her most wonderful and charming fairytale illustrations in gorgeous large colour plates. Nearly antique being published over 90 years ago this is a truly wonderful old children's book, by the sought after artist and illustrator. A scarce first edition from 1932 that has survived admirably.

The book contains some wonderfully sweet old children's stories that still appeal today. Most of all this is an extremely collectable book from a highly esteemed children's illustrator and is somewhat of a rarity.

The 25 children's stories include delights such as:

  • Little Thumbling
  • Fairy Fairplay
  • Three Days with the Fairies
  • The Golden Touch - a story based on the legend of King Midas.
  • The Changeling - based upon traditional fairy folklore.

There only seems to be a handful of these books extant now, they were aimed at young children, and Mabel appealed perfectly to both the children and their parents, who were enchanted by her illustrations of sweet chubby faced children.

Being such popular books they were so much loved that very few survived intact and often the beautifully illustrated colour plates were lost or framed for a child's nursery.

This edition is robust and complete, with just some fading and light marks here and there as seen in the photos, overall very good and most importantly complete with all the precious original colour illustrations in excellent condition.

Being the first edition from 1932, this book is from Attwell's earlier illustrative output, and the illustrations are exquisite, later her style subtly changed into the cheekier chubby children that kept the moral of the nation up during the hard times of the war years. These earlier illustrations had a gentler more fairy-like quality and are utterly charming.

A beautiful book lover's gift for anyone who loves antique and vintage children's books and one of the most sought after books by this favourite children's author.

Kittys Reader Notes & Book Snippet

Kitty's Notes:

If you want to collect antique and vintage children's books, Mabel Lucie Attwell is a great person to start with.

Her collectable old children's books of the early 20th century led the way in children's illustration and her quaint and whimsical fairy creations had a kind of down to earth realism that tugged at the nation's heartstrings. As well as having that enchanting and wondrous quality that appealed to children.

I would suggest this is certainly one of her nicest books, then I prefer her earliest illustrative style to the later immensely fun children of the 1940's through to the 1960's and 70's.

Stuffed full of sweet stories and with the exquisite line drawn and full colour plate illustrations, this charming old children's book really could only delight.

Book Excerpt:

"A Spell for a Fairy
Take a score of rose-leaves and sprinkle them with dew, Melt an ounce of rainbow to make a magic brew,
Mince a stolen moonbeam, and lightly blend the whole,
Build the fire of fir-cones and heat a gleaming bowl;
Stir throughout the twilight - then sink upon the grass,
Raise the bowl in silence and see what comes to pass -
From the silver vapour will spring each dancing sprite,
Till a ring of fairies surrounds you in the night"

This beloved childrens storybook is in robust condition, with just a tiny bit of wear from past adventures.

The orange cloth binding has some light water marks, fading and dust staining in places. Corner tips of the boards are rubbed with the cloth frayed at the very ends of the bottom right corners and bottom edge of the back board.

Without any kind of ink but a neat pencil gift inscription that could easily be erased, but is part of the books history so I have left it in situ for posterity.

Some light foxing to preliminary pages which is then scarce and lightly scattered throughout the overall clean and firm pages.

The spine is good and not frayed at the hinges, just slightly faded compared to the boards.

The colour plates are excellent lovely and bright with no foxing. Apart from the cloth which
