Antique Children's book of the enchanting ancient "Tales and Legends from India" by M. Dorothy Belgrave and Hilda Hart with beautiful old illustrations by Harry G. Theaker. First Edition.

This old children's book that was published circa 1924 contains the magnificent myth and folklore of India. The spellbinding stories are made even more enchanting with the beautiful colour plates and line drawn engravings by H. G. Theaker which are on the whole sensitively done and tastefully representing the beautiful costumes of the Indian Princesses of folklore and other mythical Indian Gods and characters from legend. Presumed first edition as no earlier version recorded.

This is the original old book from the 1920's. Being around 100 years old there are of course signs of age, the blank first free endpaper has been removed probably because it had a previous owner's name (please see our condition notes) but overall this antique book is still good and robust.

There is a colour plate vignette inset to the front cloth bound board of the book and the book contains all six of it's original splendid colour plate illustrations which are sometimes lost from these lovely old books.

The stories include the fairytale-like Indian folklore tale of 'The Hard-Hearted Princess' along with classic Indian Myths and legends such as "The Curse of Kali" and "The Adventures of Rama and Sita"

A lovely excursion into the ancient myth and legend from a country rich in heritage and folklore and a beautifully illustrated old book that anyone who loves India or wants to learn about it's rich folklore would greatly enjoy.

Kittys Reader Notes & Book Snippet

Kitty's Notes:

This wonderful old book was published in the middle of the 1920's era during the reign of King George V and his wife Queen Mary of Teck.

It details some of the marvellous and thrilling ancient stories and engaging legends from India written by the authors in the style of children's books from the early 20th century.

The most wonderful thing about this book is the enchanting illustrations of the beautiful and sometimes scary characters from Indian Folklore and religion. The charming tale of 'The Hard-Hearted Princess' is very sweet a kind of Indian version of Beauty and the Beast. A book that shows its age with some foxing but still a sturdy binding that looks nice on your bookshelf of wonderful old books.

Extract from this Book "Tales and Legends from India":

"In spite of her coarse dress, which was made from the bark of a tree, the girl was so noble-looking that the King's interest and admiration were aroused...

...'I am called Sakuntala,' she said, and as the King begged her to tell him more about herself, she added that she was the adopted daughter of Father Kanva. She had been left an orphan when a tiny child but good Kanva had treated her lovingly... and she was quite content to live this simple life among the sweet-throated birds and fragrant flowers of the forest.

As Dushyanta listened to her voice and watched her beautiful face, he felt that he could linger in this enchanting spot forever..."
