Fabulous vintage historical romance novel from one of the most famous romance authors of the 20th Century, Barbara Cartland. This lovely old romance book dates from the mid-century 1960's era and has the super Dust Jacket design by Barbara Cartland's design artist Francis Marshall who was famous for his work illustrating Vogue Magazine in the 1940's through to the mid-century era.

A classic historical romance in Barbara Cartland's inimitable style we have everything that vintage romance fans love. A runaway bride from an unsuitable match, a slightly gothic story line and a rakish love interest in the notorious Marquis of Chard.

This First Edition thus, vintage love story, was published by the Romance Book Club, 121 Charing Cross Rd., run by the famous London Bookshop 'Foyles'. The book is still surprisingly fresh and clean and in near pristine condition for a vintage hardback book published in 1967, the first publication in this vintage edition.

The fast moving plot set in the year 1856, the Victorian Romantic era, is enjoyable and will delight fans of the innocent and traditional romance genre, much like Georgette Heyer vintage books, Barbara Cartland romance books are sweet and innocent love stories, usually with a sugar-sweet romantic ending.

Kittys Reader Notes & Book Excerpt

Kitty's Notes:

Barbara Cartland's genius was fun and frothy romance set in various historical eras, her contemporary (20th century) romantic novels were generally written under her alternative name Barbara McCorquodale.

This is a Barbara Cartland classic romance novel, slightly more gothic than some of her other romantic books it has a slightly sinister main character in the slightly debauched Marquis, but it is still overall a simplistic romp through the trials and tribulations of true love - historical romance book style - that always ends happily. This is a clean romance novel and an innocent read. Great fun for fans of her rose-tinted romance genre.

Book Excerpt from "The Enchanting Evil":

" Sir Hector Stanyon commands Melinda, his niece and the poor relation in his house to marry an elderly suitor and when she refuses he tries to beat her into submission. That night Melinda creeps out of the house and escapes to London in search of work.

It is 1856 and the recently opened railway line is blocked for five house so Melinda only arrives at Euston in the evening. Frightened and not knowing where to go, she is grateful to a middle-aged lady who offers her accommodation for the night.

In the morning Melinda thinks there was laudanum in the milk the kind lady gave her and she is also perturbed by the appearance of the other occupants of the house. But the lady offers her the amazing opportunity of making five hundred guineas, for this she must go through a pretence marriage with the notorious Marquis de Chard..."
