Enchanting Antique Children's Book illustrated by Jessie Wilcox Smith "The Everyday Fairy Book" by Anna Alice Chapin circa 1920's

This charming selection of children's fairy stories from the early 1900s is exquisitely illustrated by the famous pioneering female illustrator Jessie Wilcox Smith. Famous for her moving scences of childhood and motherhood she was one of the most esteemed American Illustrators of the 20th century.

The stories are sweet and whimsical tales of magic, talking mice and fairies wrapped around the everyday lives of children in the early 1900's along with a smattering of poetry here and there. A lovely little piece of social history as well as a wonderful old children's storybook.

This large annual sized antique children's book has all the exquisite full colour plates present in beautiful condition.

This is an old book and so has obvious signs of age but is really very good indeed with clean fresh pages and just a bit of speckling to the outer text block.

There is a charming inscription to the inner front board dated Christmas 1930 although this book predates this. It was not uncommon in the early 20th century to gift favourite previously owned books, very often from parents to children or between siblings, now we call it sustainable gifting.

A lovely little heirloom children's book with tales so sweet they could still be loved by a modern day child at bedtime. And all our books ship carefully boxed and gift wrapped for that special gift.

NB: All our online bookstore's photos show our actual book for sale so you can be confident in your purchase.

Kittys Reader Notes & Book Snippet

Kitty's Notes:

A wonderful old children's book with stories just as delightful as the marvellous painterly illustrations of endearing children by Jessie Wilcox Smith.

Stories include such whimsical little tales as 'Motherkin's Story', 'The story of Little Girl who was Always Wishing', 'Sea Dreams', 'The Runaway Shadow' and 'The Doll in the Attic'.

A lesser recognised classic children's book of the early 1900's the tales are a kind of cross between the 'Josephine' books by Mrs H. C. Cradock and the later Enid Blyton tales of pixies, elves, fairies magic and talking animals.

A lovely little antique book of bedtime stories and a lovely old book find.

Extract from this Book "The Everyday Fairy Book":

"'Mouse,' he asked in low, anxious tones, 'do you believe in Fairies?'
'Believe in them?' repeated the Mouse in a puzzled way.
'I mean - do you think there are such things? ' asked Frank.
'I don't think, - I know!' squealed the Mouse. 'Where in the world can you have been brought up , - to ask such a question as that?'
'Well if you are so sure - do you believe in Kobolds'?
'Kobolds? Kobolds? Now let me think - perhaps not by that name, but -just what kinds of Fairies are Kobolds?'

'Hastily and breathlessly, Frank explained, and the Mouse listened with the greatest attention and interest.
'Why then' it squeaked excitedly and enthusiastically, 'All you have to do is light a fire! That will call your Kobold to the rescue!'
'But,' objected Frank, 'I'm not sure - not certain- that I even have a Kobold!'
'Stuff and nonsense!' said the Mouse. 'You're sure to have'..."
