The Hunting of the Snark Lewis Carroll Poem Classic Old Vintage Book Edition
The Hunting of the Snark Lewis Carroll Poem Classic Old Vintage Book Edition
In stock
Vintage Edition of Lewis Carroll's Classic Nonsense Poem "The Hunting of the Snark" First Edition thus 1980.
An appealing vintage book featuring the first edition cover of Lewis Carroll's most famous poem 'The Hunting of the Snark, An Agony in Eight Fits" and all the original absurd illustrations by Henry Holland.
This classic poem by the popular 19th century author of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland' and the sequel 'Through the Looking-Glass' transports the reader back into (in modern terminology) the 'Alice' universe. The poem is in part derived from Lewis Carroll's other classic poem "Jabberwocky" that first featured in his famous classic children's book "Through the Looking Glass".
We join the Bellman and his bizarre crew, all with names both curiously and alliteratively beginning with the letter 'B', as they hunt the mysterious and elusive "Snark", guided by a unique and utterly useless map.
With Lewis Carroll's delightful use of language and nonsense words including the familiar "Jubjub Bird" and the "Bandersnatch" characters from "Jabberwocky" hilariously dark nonsense ensues.
A marvellous piece of work by Lewis Carroll that is worthy of reading time and time again and should most definitely be a part of everyone's collection of vintage classic books.
Most enjoyable and a nice little version in this vintage book that is true to the styling of the first edition that was first published in 1876.
This neat and pleasing vintage book from the 1980's would make a perfect sustainable gift, it still has the original dust jacket and is sure to delight any fan of vintage Lewis Carroll Books.

Kitty's Notes:
For any fan of Alice in Wonderland this absurd and wonderful epic, "The Hunting of the Snark" by Lewis Carroll is surely an essential read.
Classic English literature turned upon its head as we 'gyre and gimble' hunting a creature more terrifying and elusive than the famous "Jabberwocky".
Simply put, if you love vintage Lewis Carroll books you will love this poem. If it isn't in your own book collection already buy it, and this is a lovely vintage version that harks back to the scarce and sought after first edition.
Short extract from this Book "The Hunting of the Snark":
"By which you may know, wheresoever you go,
The warranted genuine Snarks.
'Let us take them in order. The first is the taste,
Which is meagre and hollow but crisp:
Like a coat that is rather too tight in waist,
With a flavour of Will-o-the-wisp.
'Its habit of getting up late you'll agree
That it carries to far when I say
That it frequently breakfasts at five-o-clock tea,
And dines on the following day...
...'The fifth is ambition. It next will be right
To describe each particular batch:
Distinguishing those that have feathers and bite,
From those that have whiskers, and scratch.
'For, although common Snarks do no manner of harm,
Yet I feel it my duty to say,
Some are Boojums----' The Bellman broke off in alarm,
For the Baker had fainted away." contd.
