Nina Bawden, her classic children's book "The Witch's Daughter" vintage Puffin Paperback circa 1970's

A poignant and moving story about a lonely little girl called Perdita that tells of how with the brother and sister she meets they all find friendship and strength together, and in the way of the greatest children's books have an exciting adventure.

The story involves, the shore of a loch, stolen jewels, exciting caves and has everything that can entice children to engage with the story.

These old Puffin paperbacks are so charming with their original covers and are so evocative of childhood books especially if you read them when they were first released.

This engrossing tale for children was first published in 1969 and then released in Puffin shortly after. This vintage edition dates from 1974 and is in surprisingly good condition for vintage Puffin paperbacks, that are often found tired and worn, after 50 years of service.

A lovely nostalgic trip back to the popular world 1960's and 1970's paperback children's books with the iconic Puffin logo bringing back memories of being in the Puffin club.

The evocative cover design is by esteemed children's illustrator Shirley Hughes.

Kitty's Reader Notes & Book Snippet

Kitty's Notes:

This lovely little children's book by Nina Bawden, best known of course for "Carries War" has a depth that far surpasses it's genre of children's literature. Children's books were a little different in the 1960's and 70's, as author's did not feel so constrained by appropriate language or topics.

In fact, Bawden was quite ahead of her time in this wonderful exploration of otherness and how children can shine through.

Although the title suggests witchcraft, the real magic in this gentle adventure story is friendship.

Book Snippet:

"The witch's daughter sat on a rock in the bay. Her name was Perdita, which means lost, and she was an orphan. She had no friends and never went to school, and she lived in a big tumbledown house on the shore of a loch with an old woman called Annie MacLaren who was a housekeeper for a Mr Smith. All the other children were frightened of her.

Perdita watched the red steamer from the mainland unload it's passengers at the jetty. Two children, a boy and a girl got off the boat with their parents and a man with golf clubs - it was strange about the golf clubs because there were no links on the island.

These visitors were important, because Perdita made friends with the girl - Janey had a problem too: she was blind, so she didn't mind Perdita being different."
