Kittys Reader Notes & Book Snippet

Kitty's Notes:

"Thumbelina" has always been one of the best loved fairy tales written by Danish author Hans Christian Andersen. I have to admit it is one of mine, along with the other wonderful classic 'The Steadfast Tin Soldier'.

The award winning American illustrator Adrienne Adams has excelled herself with her heartwarming whimsical style in sweet pastel colours that are so pleasing in this charming Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale that was first published in on the 16th December 1865.

The translation by R. P. Keigwin is skilfully true to the original Danish tale with all its quaint wonder and magic.

Book Excerpt from "Hans Andersen's Fairy Tales"

"Once upon a time there was a young woman who longed for a tiny child, but she wished in vain. So she went to an od witch woman and told her: 'I have the greatest longing to have a little child of my own. Please help me.'

'Ah if you want your dream to come true,' said the sorceress, 'take this grain of barley. It's not the type the peasant sows in his field or the sort you feed to the chickens. Sow it in a flowerpot, tend it and just see what happens!'

'Oh, many, many thanks!' cried the young woman, and she gave the witch a silver shilling...
